Here at The Collectors Club we appreciate all watches, classic or contemporary, especially when the two combine to produce something both classic and contemporary like our Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo.

Our Audemars Piguet Royal Oak “Extra Thin” 15202, brought to market in 2012 is probably the closest you can get to the original, iconic 5402ST model introduced in 1972. Whilst the resigned model manages to maintain all the classic appointments and sleekness that made the original model so popular, there are a number of differences that mark our example out from its ancestor.

The new Royal Oak Jumbo, dubbed “Extra Thin”, is fitted with a sapphire crystal display and back, much like the previous 15202 Jumbo, replacing the original monoblock 70s case. As with all other Royal Oak Jumbos, our “Extra Thin” sports the famous Audemars Piguet Calibre 2121 movement, with pull-out crown, non-quick-set calendar mechanism with the date aperture appearing at 3 o’clock. This is the thinnest self-winding, automatic movement ever produced by any brand, combining a mind-boggling 247 parts and providing 40 hours power-reserve. The 2121 movement not having a quick-set calendar mechanism is in fact an advantage over other vintage calibres, as it has what AP call a rapid-advance calendar system.

Our Royal Oak Jumbo “Extra Thin” is admittedly a little thicker (the difference is miniscule) than the original 1972 design, but this is a small price to pay for the chance to admire the legendary 2121 movement from the back of the case. The dial on our model is the classic proprietary AP blue ‘petite tapisserie’, with double batons at 12 o’clock and the AP logo at 6 o’clock. One small difference between this “Extra Thin” model and the original Jumbo is the date wheel, which now matches the colour of the dial, instead of the original white and also sports a more modern font. To add the finishing touches, the “Extra Thin” features an extremely comfortable and classic steel bracelet, with double folding clasp sporting the AP logo and side-push buttons, very much like the original offering.

The original Audemars Piguet adverts claimed that “It Takes More Than Money to Wear a Royal Oak” and they’re right, because as of 2017, AP have discontinued the classic steel Jumbo “Extra Thin”, meaning even money can’t buy them. Luckily for Audemar Piguet fans, we have one here at The Collectors Club, which you can wear for up to 10 days at a time, at your convenience.
